(G. Travagliato)
Church of S. Maria delle Grazie and S. Pio da Pietrelcina
The church was built to meet the religious needs of the inhabitants of the new neighborhoods of Giancavaliere, S. Pantaleo and Stufània, arisen after the earthquake of 1967 to accommodate a large number of evacuees from the crumbling historic center.
The new religious building was designed by engineer Francesco Ingrassia, who conceived a Greek-cross plan with free wings, at whose intersection rises an octagonal lantern with a hipped spire. The opportunity for its construction was the donation of land made by the Iacono family.
The foundation stone was laid in 1979 by the bishop of the time Carmelo Ferraro, who inaugurated the church on September 20, 1987. Recently restored, with new altar and ambo, it was dedicated to Our Lady of Graces and St. Pio of Pietrelcina by the bishop Ignazio Zambito on November 27, 2003.
