Palazzo Indovino
(A. Pettineo)
Indovino Palace
The building, known with the name of the last owners, is located close to the eastern chapels of the church of S. Nicola. This circumstance makes us think that the original owner was a wealthy member of the clergy or confraternity. Its location along via S. Pietro, road that entered the town as prosecution of an ancient path and was crossed by the main religious processions, testifies a certain prestige.
It is an eighteenth-century construction with an axial conception. It has an elongated rectangular plan with three bays and the main entrance, exploiting the difference in height, is placed on the shorter and raised side, allowing the entry from the main floor.
The portal is framed by pilaster strips with festoons and a frieze with floral pattern that frame the arch, where two cherubs are portrayed in the keystone. The two windows at the sides, the two steps with landing that serves as podium, and the little square in front, all with elements chiseled in sandstone, are the outcome of the skilled local workers.
Three balconies, supported by stone corbels and surrounded by neoclassical aedicules, open along the front overlooking via S. Pietro. Below, facilitated by the slope of the road, are arranged the service spaces. At the back, the salons of the mansion give onto a large terrace that offered a spectacular view of the hinterland landscape.
