The feast of Our Lady of Light is celebrated every year on September 7th and 8th. It‘s a very special and characteristic feast: a couple of “Giants Warriors”, called Mithia and Kronos, which are carried on their shoulder by strong men, follow the statue of Our Lady of Light through the processional route.
The Giants can be seen already some days before the religious celebration. The statue of the Virgin is kept in the Shrine of the Cemetery. The legend says that while a hermit monk, named Benedict, was burying another friar, he discovered in a cave, situated at the foot of the Castle, an image of the Virgin which emanated a bright light. Near the image, he found huge bones, too these ones were attributed to the Giants, guarding the Virgin. On September 7th, the statue of Our Lady of Light is taken from his Sanctuary and carried on shoulders, until the Mother Church, where they celebrate the Vespers. After the celebration. comes the long awaited moment of the Giants' dance, to celebrate the Holy Mother's arrival in town. Particularly striking is the ritual dance that the Giants perform in the square in front of the Mother Church, on September 8th, at 12 o’clock.
In the afternoon, Mithia and Kronos walk next to the statue of Our Lady of Light with the baby Jesus on her arms. The statue is carried on shoulders by strong men and escorted thru all over the processional route.
In the evening the procession, illuminated by lights of torches starts its path to the Sanctuary, where it is received by the sparkling fire of the traditional bonfire. where Mithia and Kronos still dance to greet the faithful.
The Giants are part of an ancient and allegorical tradition rooted in Sicily, Calabria, Catalogna and Northern France. Mithia and Kronos have participated in several international gatherings, getting several acclaim for their beauty and elegance in the dances [extracted from the brochure edited by the feast Committee].
