(A. Pettineo)
Monument to the Fallen
On August 27, 1934, a solemn inauguration put an end to the troubled story of the Monument to the Fallen in the war. In 1919, the Administration had already decided to build it, but the works began only in 1922, designed by the architect Vinci, and were interrupted soon after the depletion of funds, despite the conspicuous contribution of the emigrants to America. Only in 1930, the chief magistrate G. Paternò resolved the situation, involving the sculptor Antonino Ugo. Ugo modified the previous project adding a moving sculpture, portraying the love of one’s country as supreme good that points to the sky while hugging a dying soldier.
